Do You Enjoy Baroque Music?
Classical Music can be traced back hundred of years ago, from the 1600s when commencement of new form of music style had emerged after the Renaissance period and what is now known as Baroque music.
Baroque music composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi and Henry Purcell, left distinguished legacy of Classical Music worldwide.
Today it is likely to be played among Classical Music Stations the famous Brandenburg Concertos and Air on G String which are composed more than three hundred years ago by JSBach.
Vivaldi wrote the Four Seasons, of which the Spring movement is one with the most recognizable pieces of Baroque music and classical music, for that matter ever written.
Purcell, the renowned English composer, wrote Dido and Aeneas, which may perhaps rank as the greatest opera ever to come out on the Baroque period of classical music.
Baroque music is characterized by a unity of mood throughout an entire work, less frequent shifts in dynamics than its successors inside Classical or Romantic eras, and a devotion to sacred music, evident in Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, or Handel's Messiah.
The Baroque music period featured the harpsichord mostly in their compositions of music as the piano has not been invented yet. That is why one will never see a piano concerto from the Baroque period of classical music.
Baroque music definitely kind of got things started out for classical music as most people know it, and served as the foundation on which later composers, including Mozart and Beethoven, would produce their music.
As a matter of fact, it was Beethoven that once referred to Handel since the greatest composer that ever lived.
Sacred music was not just the purpose of baroque music as Bach wrote some of greatest fugues, and with the ability to write fine oratorios, Handel was known worldwide.
Most people with particular liking to classical music would make reference to Bach and Handel as the two most appreciated composers of all time. Baroque music created by these renowned composers are simply incomparable.
Baroque music was an integral component of classical music today. It was also one of the highlights of music history wherein many composers from different nations provided for a massive musical history achievement. Baroque is really an interesting period for music, and to anyone that has knowledge of classical music, baroque music is surely one of them.
About the Author
Baroque music lovers will agree, there's a lot to love about Mandolin instruments. If you've been thinking about learning to play a mandolin, you might start here to find some mandolins for sale.
About Classical Music Instruments - Baroque, classical and romantic periods?
Hi. I'm discovering classical music and I wanted to ask those of you who are familiar with it if my "theory" is right.
so my theory is that some family of instruments are more or less predominant in the music of each era. For instance, for the three eras I quoted in the subject it would be
Baroque - Harpsichord, organ and other "keyboard instruments" (think of Bach)
Classical - Wind instuments (Think of Mozart, Hayd)
Romantic - Wind instruments (like Wagner)
And I know that each era uses every family but I think some are more predominant in each era. Like for example when I listen to romantic music I tend to "perceive" consciusly the wind instruments, thing that does not happens in the classical era, where the wind instruments are not very "visible"
So, what do you people with a better understanding of classical music think about this. Are my views on this correct?
Thx
That is an interesting question.
I think it depends on the kind of music you listen to. There was a plethora of wind instrument music in the Baroque period (concertos, solo music, etc.). And the Romantic period saw a surge in Piano Music (think Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, etc.) Let's not forget music for strings which reached its peak with the string quartets of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and also play a significant role in the melody of almost any Symphony. There are whole movements that use almost entirely strings only.
Certainly, the use of harpsichord and organ drops off significantly after the Baroque period. You may be noticing its absence more than increased predominance of wind instruments. Also, there was no professional Orchestra in the modern sense of the term. Musicians had to be supported by patrons (from the aristocracy), so there tended to be very few and very small orchestras.
It is generally agreed that expansion of wind instrumentation began with Beethoven, who doubled and sometimes tripled the woodwind / brass players. He was one of the first to add trombones to the brass section, where previously there had been only trumpets and horns.
For Wagner and beyond, I would say that brass instruments definitely gained more prominence within the Orchestra as you start to get more and more trombones, tubas, euphoniums, etc.
