American Traditional Rock?
Why were their live shows more significant than their albums?
What's their overall style and image?

I assume that by "american traditional rock", you're talking about jam bands? i.e. the Grateful Dead, Phish and the Black Crowes. The other bands you listed I know of (and have heard a few songs from), but don't really listen to them.
*First question: Why were their live shows more significant than their albums?
I don't think that they meant for them to be. It was just something that happened. Take the Dead for example, who were most notorious for their live shows. Some people don't understand the appeal of them because they've only heard their studio albums and had never been to a show. I'm too young to have ever been to one of their shows, but I can imagine what it was like. There's this groove to it, that takes you to a whole other level. It's like you're sitting in with the band instead of just watching them perform. Make sense? I doubt it. I'm tired and having trouble explaining myself...
*Second question: What's their overall style and image?
Not one style. They can play anything from Blues to rockabilly. Image? There's generally this hippie, stoner image surrounding them.
*Third question: How did the "word" spread about there kind of groups? What was the major factor in getting their Music out to listeners?
I probably shouldn't be answering this question, as I'm only 19. I discovered this Music through my dad and just going to the record store and picking up random albums. I imagine, though, that it's from touring all over and touring A LOT. That's how you get the word out. Because even if people don't know who you are, they'll still go a lot of times just for the fun of going to a live show. And if it turns out to be a great band, even better.
