Top 3 Dubstep Records of the Year 2009
2009 will undoubtedly be known as the year that dubstep, the UK electronic dance Music genre that mixes garage tempos, reggae and hip-hop, broke into the United States. It isn't Music to listen to while riding around in your drop top Bimmer with new custom BMW wheels, but instead it's perfect for late night clubs and warehouse parties. The genre has been around since the early 2000s but until now it has been largely ignored in the United States. Thanks to some extensive coverage in magazines like The Wire and the indie-music website Pitchfork Media, dubstep has broken into the American scene with its influence pervading many other genres and artists in the States such as Four Tet and Hot Chip. Here is a quick list of the top three dubstep albums of 2009.
2562 – “Unbalance”
A leftfield entry in the year’s best dubstep releases, the man behind 2562, Dave Huismans, had recorded for years under other monikers but has hit his stride with “Unbalance” a great mixture between the less aggressive forms of dubstep and minimal techno. For those who are already into techno or electronic music but not familiar with dubstep this would be a great first record to listen to.
FaltyDL – “Love is a Liability”
FaltyDL (aka Andrew Lustman) has released so much good music this year it is hard to even single out his album, “Love as a Liability” as his best work of the year. FaltyDL’s style of dubstep is much more highly influenced by hip-hop and the use of sampling inherent in the genre, but he has a definite sense of dubstep rhythm with his use of 2-step and garage moves. If you only buy one electronic album this year, I would suggest “Love is a Liability.” Every track is its own little world, yet the record flows wonderfully well as a full piece.
Peverelist – “Jarvik Mindstate”
A little more on the obscure and sometimes obstinately so, side of dubstep, Peverlist is fully immersed in the dark, repetitive side of dubstep, stretching his songs to nearly nine minutes long and fully capable of keeping your attention for that span of time. “Jarvik Mindstate” isn’t the most accessible dubstep album of the year, and definitely not the first one I would suggest to a newcomer but is definitely one of the most powerful and exciting.
